Why resumes or CVs are a waste of time for software engineers

Resumes and/or CVs are a long time entry for a new job or a standard way to change jobs. It can’t tell much for a person, just the basic information about the engineer, what he’s been doing over the years, which companies worked on and so on… but is that really needed?

There are some basic questions and put all this into perspective:

  • Does a CV tells you what you really are?
  • Is the CV a powerful piece of information or just an indicative one?
  • Is it really necessary for interviews?
  • What happen to the CV after the interview and the professional is hired?

With all these questions in mind, I truly believe that CVs are useless… specially after the interviews and the engineer is selected.

With platforms like LinkedIn, GitHub and others you can easily trace your career with great amount of detail, tell which persons you’ve worked with, which projects are you currently working on and what you do with your free time.

Nowadays it’s very important for software engineers to collaborate in OSS, open issues, pull requests, create libraries or simply translate the help or readme into their native language.

If you have all that up-to-date, which is not a “oh let me update this because I’m going to apply for a different job” thing, it’s a on-going task, where you keep your digital fingerprint flawless.

Like Scott Hanselman said, there are a lot of black matter developers out there but do we really need to be like that? Don’t we want to make a difference and have our work to be recognised?

Rezult IO

Taking a moment to reflect into all this, I believe that our social networks tell us everything we need to know about your past! Here at Rezult IO we want you to step up and make a difference right now, which will change the future!

Besides, companies usually print those CVs just to take a better look during the interviews and then… garbage… or recycling ♻️. What about all those threes? 🌲
